Overview
As of early 2017, for new work, it is recommended to use the NXcanSAS (multi-dimensional)
standard for both 1-D and n-D data to maximize the chance that other
software will be able to read your data files.

We strongly encourage all authors of small-angle scattering related software to add support for NXcanSAS.
The working group was formed at canSAS-VIII in Japan. At canSAS-XI in Friesing it was agreed that we would liaise with the reflectometry community, who are having a meeting in October 2019. Tim Snow is organising that meeting and Adrian Rennie and Andrew Jackson are likely to be attending. Sebastian Jaksch is interested in doing some work on GISANS standards.
August 2012 update
The bibliography and vacancy list from the Diamond/ISIS SAS software site (http://www.small-angle.ac.uk) has been transferred to the portal.

July 2012 update
A new portal is created at canSAS-2012.

September 2009 update
At the facilities representatives discussion group, and pursued further at the canSAS discussions at the 2009 SAS meeting in Oxford, Paul Butler agreed to find some funds to get a student to start the process of putting up the first draft of a portal. The first action was to choose an appropriate domain name that would be easy to remember as THE SAS site. smallangle.org was suggested, the availability verified and the domain purchased. It was agreed that the front page should be a landing page that then allowed easy navigation to whatever SAS information was being sought. After a small brainstorming session, it was agreed that the next step was to implement those first ideas and then pass by the facilities representatives group for a first cut at polishing before advertising to the SAS mailing list and to all SAS beamline scientists possible. Some of the ideas for the first go include:
*listing of available SAS analysis software with links
*listing of resources for learning SAS techniques/SAS bibliography
*access to the SAS mailing list archive
*instructions on how to join the sas mailing list and a link to the joining page
*upcoming meetings of interest to the SAS community (a web form allowing people to upload information on their meeting was suggested)
*link to the world directory of small-angle neutron scattering facilities
**this has recently been updated. Facilities are encouraged to send updates to Ralf Schweins
**No equivalent SAXS directory seems to exist. Pete Jemian is planning on addressing that, perhaps under the IUCR aegis
*information about canSAS, its efforts and links to working group pages
*link to web site of SAS commission of IUCR

NOTES FROM GROUP A

Q-calibration samples
We propose to design a variety of highly aligned/well ordered samples for Q calibration on x-ray and neutron beamlines. Whilst in some cases, calibration can be done by other means (e.g. accurate distance measurement), not all beamline designs permit this (e.g. multiple detectors with translation and rotation) and calibration by sample is a valuable cross check. Several possible samples were discussed: Silicon based gratings, imprint lithography, 1-tetradecanol, and porous silica materials.

Multi-modal Measurement & Analysis
To address the growing emphasis on multi-modal analysis, where scientists will use a broad panel of methods to analyse their samples, we need to provide tools that allow users to combine scattering analysis with analysis of data from other methods e.g. TEM and SFM, DLS, NMR. To achieve that we first need to provide a detailed summary of the current state of art of combining other methods with scattering - this could take the form of a list of categorized articles on the SAS portal. This aggregation of existing methodologies is the first step to being able to embed these algorithms into software tools.

Expectations from SAS methods
Need for understanding of how other sizing methods compare with SAS methods - e.g. what size should SAXS give if DLS gives size X and size distribution Y? Users often arrive at large scale facilities with prior characterization from lab methods - can we develop guidelines or tools to help them work out what to expect from the SAS measurements.

Errors for intensity are always estimated. Q units are 1/A. The Q resolution (width of bin in Q) is same for all points - 1e^-4 [1/a] and therefore is not reported. Q-bin smearing is practically not necessary. Significant fraction of samples exhibit multiple scattering effects for which we attempt to make correction for absolute intensity calibration. Most of data processing parameters are stored in keyword list in the wave note.

List of wave names and description:
Folder name in Igor is the sample name - and sample name and description is included in the wave note of all waves.
SMR_Int, SMR_Error, SMR_Qvec .... slit smeared Intensity, Error, and Q. Slit length is in the wave note.
M_SMR_Int, M_SMR_Error, M_SMR_Qvec.... slit smeared data, absolute intensity corrected for multiple scattering effects.
DSM_Int, DSM_Error, DSM_Qvec .... de-smeared (using Lake method) or 2-D collimated data.
M_DSM_Int, M_DSM_Error, M_DSM_Qvec .... de-smeared or 2-D collimated data, absolute intensity corrected for multiple scattering effects.

Nika data naming structure
Nika is universal package for reduction of 2D data into 1D "lineouts" for Igor Pro. It is used mostly for X-ray SAXS and WAXS instruments (synchrotron & desktop). It can output data either as function of Q, angle, or d-spacing. It can generate either maximum number of Q points (one Q per pixel on detector) or re bin the points to smaller number, or re bin the points to semi-logarithmic distribution in Q. It provides width of bin in Q as additional wave with each data for tools which enable accounting for Q-bin smearing.
To identify the sector geometry (or circular average), "_ending" is attached to the end of output wave names:
"_C" circular average
"_Angle_HalfWidth" sector average around direction of Angle with sector +/- HalfWidth
example: "_10_5" average around 10 degrees direction with sector 10 degrees (+/- 5 degrees) wide. Or to use another description - sector between lines in 5 degrees and 15 degrees azimuth on the detector.

List of data types
Sample name is used as folder name and each folder contains data from only one sample & sector.
"QRS" namings structure:
q_sampleName_ending .... Q with units in [1/A]
r_sampleName_ending .... Intensity with units 1/cm (if data are calibrated)
s_sampleName_ending .... Error for intensity (statistical error from averaged pixels)
w_sampleName_ending .... Q bin width
optionally instead of Q one can use:
t_sampleName_ending .... Two theta value in degrees
d_samplename_ending .... d-spacing value in A
* Nov 18, 2009 - Second meeting convened -- Preliminary notes available
* Aug 19, 2009 - First meeting convened -- minutes available
* Nov 2008 - After the workshop, it became clear that not only were there a significant number of facilities from the meeting who wanted to participate, but quite a number of facilities that were unable to attend were mentioned as important to have particpate. This raises the question of how best to proceed. A tele/video conference with that many nodes and people is not likely to be productive, yet reducing representation seems to defeat the purpose of the group. Some suggestions so far are:
** divide into subgroups of no more than 6 or 7 (probably high for a vido link and a bit high for real discussions). This would require some kind of uber group to facilitate the communication between groups. Two possiblities are:
*** Make up of groups is set radomly. Each group would then presumably choose a representative to the uber group. Advantage is the encouragement of cross region fertilization. Disadvantage is that regional groups might be useful in themselves for discussion of purely regional issues.
*** Regional groups are formed with the uber group having a representative from each of the regional groups
** Keep one large group but have presentation led disucussions to stimulate discussion. This would require much more off line effort and still not allow quite the same kind of rapid development of ideas and issues, but would keep everyone together.
* Nov 2008 - Paul Butler will need to contact the current members and discuss the best way to proceed. This may involve a teleconference of the current particpants. This item will be taken up in early January
Samples of a monodisperse polystyrene latex have recently been measured at ILL (D22 and D11), ANSTO (Quokka), ISIS (SANS2D) and at NCNR (NG7). Samples are also at Diamond awaiting measurement.
Details and data here : Latex Round Robin

A new series of samples designated J, K, L and that have slightly different dilution have been provided for measurements at APS, FRMII, SPRING-8 and ILL.

Results of measurements with some conclusions are described in a publication in Journal of Applied Crystallography:

A. R. Rennie, M. S. Hellsing, K. Wood, E. P. Gilbert, L. Porcar, R. Schweins, C. D. Dewhurst, P. Lindner, R. K. Heenan, S. E. Rogers, P. D. Butler, J. R. Krzywon, R. E. Ghosh, A. J. Jackson and M. Malfois 'Learning about SANS instruments and data reduction from round robin measurements on samples of polystyrene latex', Journal of Applied Crystallography, 46, (2013). doi: 10.1107/S0021889813019468 .

Calibration Procedures
We will try to gather summaries of the procedures used for calibration of small-angle scattering instruments. It has been suggested that summaries of information would benefit both users and those who run instruments and facilities. Everyone is encouraged to contribute to this work in progress. Procedures for laboratory instruments as well as sycnchrotron and neutron facilities are welcome.

Details are here : Calibration Procedures
