NOTES FOR GROUP C

Main Thoughts

  1. We need to foster better communication to minimize duplication. canSAS meetings are a good start but something more robust would be helpful. Having a page on the portal or wiki where people could list development projects they are working on could be a good start.
  2. A published protocol for communication for each beam line would be very useful - including how to get information from the unique environment into the data file. A COMMON data format would be ideal. It is noted that the International Society of Sample Environment (ISSE) | www.sampleenvironment.org is a newish organization but seem to have an active project on creating a standard communications protocol between instruments and sample environments which should be consulted prior to embarking on a separate project within canSAS.
  3. Emerging techniques generate non standard data reduction and analysis needs. Moreover the need to see reduced and some type of simple analysis on the fly is even more important for quality checking here than in ordinary measurements.

Other Discussion Points

  • A listing of the simple standard connectors (plumbing?) and equipment available would be very nice and even nicer if beamlines could co-operate and come up with some standard connectors so that one does not have to constantly redo the equipment every time it goes to a new facility.
  • It would be really useful if on the portal for example we could list beamlines by availability of non-standard equipment (e.g. where can I do GISAS? where can I do RheoSANS? etc).
